E Ink's AM200 Active Matrix Electronic Paper Display (EPD) Prototype Kit is designed for product designers, engineers and technologists who want hands-on access to a high-resolution paper-like display. The kit includes a production sample of a glass-based active matrix display made using E Ink's Vizplex imaging film, MetronomeTM Display Controller along with all of the hardware and software necessary to produce a fully functional portable device. The AM200 kit supports 5", 6", 8" and 9.7" displays. Please check our store for panel availability.

Details

The protoyping kit is based around the Gumstix single-board computer, which combines a 400 MHz Marvell XScale® PXA255 processor with a Bluetooth transceiver, USB, a serial port and an MMC card reader. For mobile device prototyping, the kit also includes two Li-ion batteries with a total capacity of over 4000 mW-h, and an integrated battery charger.

Linux, the popular open-source operating system, comes pre-installed on the Gumstix board. E Ink also supplies open-source software display drivers and sample applications. Developers will have the ability to download the full source code for the operating system, drivers and applications, and to write and compile new applications using the gcc development environment and cross-compiler.

The kit comes pre-configured to operate as a simple electronic book reader. Out of the box, users can download page images from their PC to the included MMC card and view them on the display with no further programming or assembly.

The above photo shows a simple prototype e-reader application that was assembled from the components included in the prototype kit, packaged in a two-piece acrylic case. This prototype weighs under 150 grams (about the same as a thin magazine), is only 7.2 mm thick, and is powered by the internal Li-ion battery pack that is included in the kit. Users can load content onto the device through the MMC card slot.

Prime View International (PVI) of Taiwan manufactures this 6" display using E Ink® Imaging Film.
